Slow Cooker French Onion Soup Recipe

Ingredients:  

Main Ingredients

  • 4 large yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 6 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 2 cups grated Gruyere cheese

Instructions: 

  • 1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 20 minutes.
  • 2. Add garlic and brown sugar, cook for another minute.
  • 3. Pour in white wine to deglaze the pan, scraping up any browned bits.
  • 4. Transfer the onion mixture to the slow cooker. Add beef broth, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and pepper.
  • 5. Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours.
  • 6. Before serving, remove bay leaf. Ladle soup into bowls, top with toasted baguette slices and grated Gruyere cheese.
  • 7. Broil until cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve hot.

Notes:

For a richer flavor, use a combination of beef and chicken broth.
