Beef Birria Recipe

Ingredients:  

Main Ingredients

  • 2 lbs Beef chuck roast cut into chunks
  • 4 cups Beef broth
  • 3 Dried guajillo chiles stems and seeds removed
  • 2 Dried ancho chiles stems and seeds removed
  • 1 White onion quartered
  • 4 cloves Garlic
  • 1 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1 tsp Ground cumin
  • 2 tsp Salt or to taste
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 2 Bay leaves

Instructions: 

  • 1. Toast the dried chiles in a dry skillet over medium heat until fragrant, about 2 minutes.
  • 2. Soak the toasted chiles in hot water for 20 minutes, then drain.
  • 3. Blend the soaked chiles, onion, garlic, oregano, cumin, and 1 cup of beef broth until smooth.
  • 4. In a large pot, add the beef chunks and pour the blended sauce over the meat.
  • 5. Add the remaining beef broth, bay leaves, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 3 hours or until the beef is tender.
  • 6. Remove the bay leaves and shred the beef with forks. Serve with warm tortillas and your favorite toppings.

Notes:

Birria is traditionally served with a side of consommé for dipping.
