Instructions:
1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
2. Add sugar and stir constantly until the mixture reaches 300°F (150°C) on a candy thermometer.
3. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
4. Pour the mixture onto a baking sheet and spread evenly.
5. Sprinkle chocolate chips on top and let them melt, then spread the chocolate evenly.
6. Sprinkle chopped nuts on top if using.
7. Let the toffee cool completely before breaking it into pieces.
Notes:
Store in an airtight container for up to two weeks.
