Instructions:
1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
2. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes until the mixture is smooth and bubbly.
3. Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
4. Continue to cook and whisk until the sauce thickens and comes to a simmer.
5. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg if using. Serve over pasta.
Notes:
This white sauce can be used as a base for many other sauces. Add cheese for a cheese sauce or herbs for extra flavor.
