Instructions:
Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
Add chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
Add minced garlic and cook for another minute.
Stir in crushed tomatoes, salt, sugar, dried oregano, and red pepper flakes if using.
Bring to a simmer and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Stir in fresh basil and cook for another 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and serve.
Notes:
This sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week or frozen for up to 3 months.
