Ingredients:  

Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Frosting

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions: 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking sheet.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a saucepan, melt butter with water and cocoa powder. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat.
  • Pour the cocoa mixture over the dry ingredients and mix well.
  • Add buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  • Pour batter into the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • For the frosting, melt butter in a saucepan. Stir in cocoa powder and milk. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat.
  • Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  • Pour frosting over the warm cake and spread evenly. Let cool before serving.

Notes:

This cake is best served warm, but it keeps well at room temperature for a few days.
