Ingredients:  

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1.5 cups warm water
  • 2 tbsp lard or vegetable shortening

Instructions: 

  • 1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  • 2. Add the warm water and lard (or shortening) to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  • 3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  • 4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • 5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it on a greased baking sheet.
  • 6. Bake for 25 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  • 7. Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes:

This bread is perfect for sandwiches or just enjoying with butter.
