Instructions:
1. In a large pot, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat.
2. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 30-40 minutes.
3. Stir in sugar and cook for another 5 minutes.
4. Add beef broth and wine, bring to a boil, then simmer for 20 minutes.
5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
6. Preheat oven to broil.
7. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with toasted baguette slices and grated Gruyère cheese.
8. Broil until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.
Notes:
For a richer flavor, use a mix of beef and chicken broth.
