Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 20 minutes.
Add beef broth to the skillet and simmer for 5 minutes.
Transfer the onion mixture to a baking dish. Top with shredded Gruyere cheese and bread crumbs.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot.
Notes:
For a vegetarian version, use vegetable broth instead of beef broth.
