Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and sugar, cook until onions are caramelized, about 20 minutes.
Sprinkle flour over onions and stir well. Gradually add beef broth, stirring constantly. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
Pour onion mixture into a baking dish. Top with toasted bread slices and sprinkle with shredded Gruyere cheese.
Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly.
Serve hot.
Notes:
For a richer flavor, use a mix of Gruyere and Swiss cheese.
